Stefan Mortensen (Academy Award® winner Geoffrey Rush), once a respected judge, suffers a stroke during a court session and is transferred to a modest care home. Confined to a wheelchair and overwhelmed by frustration and loss of control, he struggles to regain his dignity and independence.

At first, adapting to the new environment proves difficult. But his greatest challenge is his roommate: Dave Crealy (Academy Award® nominee John Lithgow). To the staff, Crealy appears to be a sweet, confused old man — but at night, he becomes a sadistic manipulator. Using his hand puppet, Jenny Pen, he psychologically torments the other residents. No one believes Stefan when he tries to raise the alarm. One by one, residents are humiliated or pushed to the edge of despair. Even a fatal incident is quietly covered up. Together with fellow resident Tony Garfield, a quiet former athlete, Stefan decides to take justice into his own hands.
